For $2 your valentine will get a special delivery that consists of a colorful card with a personal message and a valentine’s themed lollipop delivered to their Crew on February 14th!   1. Come meet the Smith College Interns and prepare for the 2nd National GSA Day which will be held on Wednesday, February 6th, 2013, presented by the LGBT Coalition of Western MA.
  2. Save the date for World Challenge!  On Wednesday, January 23rd, World Challenge is having a fundraising night to raise money for Costa Rica.  All you have to do is eat at Chili’s in Springfield and bring a World Challenge flyer with you.  See Ms. Cramer (139) or Chris Mulligan with questions.  Thank you for your support.
  3. Elms College is hosting a Job Shadow on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 from 9:00am to 1:00pm (lunch is included) for 45 students. The program will include a welcome by the President or Academic Vice President, an overview of the degree programs offered at the college and careers related to those degrees. This will include Criminal Justice, Business, Education, IT & Nursing. Sign up dead line before Jan 25, 2013.   Please see Mr. Ekmalian for permission slips.
  4. HS art club will meet Wed, Jan 23 in Room 50 at 3:00
  5. GSA meeting in Rm 50 on Thursday, Jan. 24. Help plan our role in the 2nd Annual GSA Day on Wed. Feb, 6th2013 at Commerce! All are welcome!!

  1. Are you interested in an ANNUAL BLACK COLLEGE TOUR.  The tour is April 13-19, 2013.  Total cost is $625.00.  If you are interested please see Mrs. Mitchell in Room 55

  5. Anyone interested in buying a ticket to the Hoop Hall Classic held this weekend at Springfield College on Thurs, 1/17 thru Monday, 1/21 can purchase them in the main office at half price.  The tickets are only $5.00!!!!!  CASH ONLY

  7. JA has a great new program to offer to up to 15 high school students! The program is Career Exploration program with the Springfield Falcons, the local AHL Hockey Team. The program will run weekly after school on Wednesdays at the JA office ( or sometimes at the MassMutual Center)  for 2 hours (Timing is proposed from 5-7:00pm but can be changed depending on the students involved) 

The program is slated to run from January 23 to March 20th. On March 20th the students will host a JA Night at the Springfield Falcons’ game at the MassMutual Center. Sign up dead line before Jan 22, 2013.   Please see Mr. Ekmalian for permission slips.

Essay Scholarship for 7th and 8th Graders.

The Freedom Credit Union is hosting an essay contest for students in 7th and 8th grades.  To that end, I need you to work with your ELA teachers to identify students that would be willing to write a 250 word essay on the topic of “People Helping People”. Students must hand write a 250 word essay that describes an event that impacted their life. The essay should provide evidence for how this event is an example of “People Helping People.” Forms are in the Guidance and Counseling Office.

Essays are Due in the Guidance and Counseling Office on January 16th at 8:45 am.

 

10th and 11th grade students who are applying for the Christian A. Herter Scholarship (Due IN BOSTON ON FEBRUARY 1ST), must do the following:

  1. Write a resume – that explicitly details experiences and honors and details the value of those experiences during 8th grade and high school
  2. Ask two academic teachers for recommendations – end of day Friday, January 18th
  3. Ask your assigned Guidance Counselor (Ms. Wilson or Ms. Cuffee-Gray) for a Nomination and recommendation by end-of-day January 22nd
  4. Complete your essay for an essay workshop on Monday, January 22nd during crew (you must attend this session with a completed to get a nomination)
  5. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding 2012 financial information – complete form in packet

You can get a pass for the essay workshop on Tuesday, 1/22 from Ms. Grant in Guidance.

  2. Renaissance’s new Teen Health Club is raising awareness about AIDS and will be collecting money to donate to the AIDS Foundation of Western Mass. The crew that donates the most money will win an ice cream treat! Please get ready, as student club members will begin coming to crews on Thursday, January 10th.
  3. Students and Faculty members, we are looking for volunteers to speak at our Martin Luther King Day assembly on Jan. 22nd. Speakers would share a quote by Dr. King and explain how that quote relates to or impacts our own experiences as Americans in 2013. Please see Ms. Camara in the Black Box Theatre with questions.
  4. Renaissance GSA will meet on Thursday, Jan. 10. Come meet the Smith College Interns and prepare for the 2nd National GSA Day which will be held on Wednesday, February 6th, 2013, presented by the LGBT Coalition of Western MA.
  5. Dear 8th grade and 12th grade crew teachers:

The 12th grade mentees should meet me in the cafeteria this Friday AM after checking in with their crew teacher. After they check in with me, I will send them to their mentee’s crew room. I will circulate to 8th grade crews to check-in to see how things are going with each pair.  12th grade crew teachers: Please send students down to meet me as soon as you can!  8th grade crew teachers: the master plan is that crews will be enhanced by this activity. Please let me know if this does not turn out to be the case! Any questions, let me know. Excited to try this new version; I feel very good about it!

The goal of CISV Boarding Pass to Peace work is to introduce students in the Springfield Public Schools, and other schools, to the values of CISV: Friendship, Engagement, Enthusiasm, Cooperation, and Inclusiveness.  We will work to relate these values to conflict and peaceful resolution, and, the positive power of friendship building; help students understand how conflicts can arise deliberately or otherwise, and, help them identify what can be done to help bring about a peaceful resolution.

       6th Graders – Become Peace Makers!!!

                 The goal of CISV Boarding Pass to Peace work is to introduce students in the     

                 Springfield Public Schools, and other schools, to the values of CISV: Friendship, 

                 Engagement, Enthusiasm, Cooperation, and Inclusiveness.  We will work to relate 

                 these values to conflict and peaceful resolution, and, the positive power of friendship 

                 building; help students understand how conflicts can arise deliberately or otherwise, 

                 and, help them identify what can be done to help bring about a peaceful resolution.
