Middle School Activities

Club Name: middle school girls basketball

Open to: girls grades 6-8

Description: middle school team will play 9 games during the season and will practice 1-2 times per week. Must have a current physical (see the nurse) and be academically cleared to play

Club Name: CSI Club     

Leader: Rebecca Jackson

Meeting Time/Day: Mondays, once a month – sign up with Ms. Jackson for reminders through crew

Open to: middle school students

Room: we’re looking for a room

Description: If you love watching the CSI TV shows and want to learn how to lift fingerprints, or analyze ink samples, or compute time of death for yourself, come join us.  We meet once a month for a laboratory activity highlighting one crime scene investigation technique.

Club Name: Healthy Relationships/Teen Health Club (Name to be determined by club members)

Leader: Kristen Baran

Meeting Time/Day: Mondays during high school lunch

Open to: 9-12th graders

Description: This club seeks to raise awareness around a variety of healthy relationships/teen health issues such as: healthy dating relationships, dating violence, domestic violence, teen pregnancy, stress management, healthy coping strategies, communication strategies, etc.

High School Activities

 

Club Name: Academic WorldQuest

Leader: Ms. Sullivan

Meeting Time/Day: TBA

Open to: grades 9-12

Room: TBA

Description:  Academic WorldQuest is a team competition testing high school students’ knowledge of international affairs.  In the competition, four-person teams compete by answering multiple choice questions divided into ten unique and engaging thematic categories.  A genuine interest in international affairs and a willingness to work as part of a team are a must.

Club Name: Mock Trial (with Loevy-Reyes)

Meeting Day: Mondays after school- grades 9-12

Meeting Room-116

Description:  Become a prosecutor or a defense attorney and argue your case!  This is a competitive group that engages in a ‘mock’ trial with students from other Western Massachusetts schools.  The cases are either criminal or civil and the participants take on the roles of lawyers and witnesses in a competition for Regional Winners.

Club Name: High School Student Council

Meeting Time/Day: depends on committee (some lunch meetings and Wed after school)

Open to: 9-12 graders

Description: A place for students to gather to tackle student concerns and plan student events. If you have a great idea, come to us and we will help you make it happen.  Right now we are working with Sodexho to make our lunches better, planning a Haunted House, and preparing for the Homecoming Powderpuff game!

Club Name: World Challenge

The next World Challenge Trip will be a 14 day trip to Costa Rica in the summer of 2014.  It will be a combination of service and trekking.  Students will experience Costa Rica’s amazing landscapes including jungle, cloud forest, and its world famous beaches.  Anyone interested in participating should attend the parent meeting on November 1st.  More information will be coming to crews very soon about the expedition.

 

 Club Name: National Honor Society

Open to: Students grades 9-12 with a 3.3 GPA or better

Description:  NHS students lead our school community with dignity and respect.  These students encourage their peers to see the importance of service and leadership.  This year students successfully planned our first annual leadership retreat at the Springfield College East Campus facility.  NHS also plans and celebrates our annual off campus Homecoming Dance.

Apples on a Lemon Tree (ALT) is a collective of writers and artists from the Renaissance community. We publish individual pieces of student work, collaborations / split issues, and Apples Annual, a year-end anthology of student writing.

We meet in room 118 on Tuesdays during HS lunch, but you can come by any time to talk with Mr. Stein about submitting your work.

Adventure club organizes activities such as hiking, ziplining, and whitewater rafting.  Students can sign up for any activities that they are interested in.  Some events will be free and some will cost money.  Also, students can coordinate with Ms. Cramer to organize an activity that they are interested in.  All trips will be posted in the announcements and some will be advertised on flyers around the school.

Description: Cheerleading is a winter sport which consists of performing at pep rallies, basketball games, as well as competitions. Dedication at practices, games, fundraisers, and etc. is a must!

Club Name: Renaissance Players

Meeting Time/Day: Thursday, 4-6

Open to: 6-12 graders by audition

Room: 125/Blackbox theatre

Description: We are a group that produces a fall and spring play and also allows for awesome intensives experiences. This year we will produce a fall drama titled Doubt, and as spring comedy. The winter Intensives experience will be a Shakespearean comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Club Name: Mathletes

Meeting Time/Day: Mondays after school until late bus

Room: was 136J but we’re looking for a room

Description: Mathletes is an activity for students who like puzzles and math problems.  We do non-traditional problems, sometimes competing for speed, sometimes trying to find a creative solution over multiple days.  Both middle and high school students have opportunities to participate in pencil-and-paper competitions and traveling meets.

Club Name: Phoenix Tribune (formerly the Talon) newspaper

Meeting Time/Day: Wednesdays after school until late bus

Open to: all students

Room: was 136J, next meeting in the library, we’ll see if we can stay there

Description: the newspaper is an opportunity for students to learn how to report, to help layout and circulate a newspaper, and to have their writing published.  Both future journalists and those only interested in writing a single story are welcome to join us.

Club Name: Phoenix Astronomy Club

Description: Astronomy Club members watch films about NASA and the cosmos, learn to recognize constellations and planets in the sky, prepare podcasts for 365 Days of Astronomy 365daysofastronomy.org, and become expert at using our 8” reflecting telescope with a solar filter.

Description: An organization which encourages academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to citizens. These are the 5 main components: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character

Club Name:  Phoenix Virtual Flying Club

Leader:  Mr. McCormic

Meeting Time/Day:  Thursdays, 2:50 – 3:50

Open to: Anyone interested

Description:  Participants use flight simulator soft-ware to learn about flying different kinds of airplanes and helicopters ranging from ultra-lights to jumbo jets, gliders to seaplanes.  Our software is based on real world applications allowing students to plan and accomplish “flights” to real world airports in all types of weather.  Students can choose instructional flights, mission based and sight seeing flights, as well as design their own flying trips. Students can fly just for fun or they can choose to learn flying by instruments, flight characteristics, navigation, radio procedures, air traffic procedures, and more.

Club Name: Humans vs. Zombies

Meet in Room 106

Come and play Humans vs. Zombies, an action packed tag game using Nerf guns that is played on college campuses.

Sign up in the cafeteria at lunch on Wednesday and Thursday of the week of play.

Club Name: High School Art Club

This club is an opportunity for high schoolers to get the art time they are missing. Come to Art Club with a project you want to complete or we can come up with one in the club. This should be an opportunity for more advanced study and exploration in techniques and materials.

The Renaissance GSA is a club for the LGBTQ community and their allies. We sponsor Ally Week, The Day of Silence and are committed to educating students, families, faculty and staff about LGBTQ issues and achievements.

Meeting Time/Day: Middle School 1st Monday of the month in the school store during lunch.  High School:  Lunch meetings as needed.

Description: A place for students to practice business skills and have fun. If you have a great merchandising idea, come to us and we will help you make it happen.  We need people to work on advertising, merchandising, and accounting. Any student interested in participating in the school store, see Ms. Graziani in room 106A.

Club Name: Renaissance Scholars

Meeting Time: Thursdays after-school

Meeting Location: Mrs. Coburn

Open to: All students with all H.O.W higher than a 3

Description: Renaissance Scholars is based on H.O.W. Students with a 3 or higher in all H.O.W are considered Renaissance Scholars. Currently looking for Renaissance Scholars to sit on the Scholar Appeals Board. Students interested should see Mrs. Coburn before November 1 to complete an application.
